Basic DIY Organic Soil Kit

Organic Soil mixes are a fun DIY project for any grower of cannabis or even veggies and ornamental plants.

The basic soil mix of Coco Coir, Compost, Perlite, Kelp and Biochar can be supplemented further but this is the basics.

Mixing Ratio:

One Block of Coco.

One Bag of Worm Castings.

A Third to Half a Bag Perlite.

One Bag of Kelp.

Half a Bag Biochar.

Coco Coir

Made from the coconut husk and compressed into a dense brick. When expanded with the addition of water, the 5kg brick will be able to produce 60-70L of substrate.

To ensure any excess salt has been removed, this substrate must be washed with water 2-3 times before it can be used.

Coco Coir is a growing medium used the world over and contains little to no nutrients, this is why the addition of organic amendments is advised.

pH level of Coco Coir: 6.0 – 6.8 (once washed 2-3 times)

Worm Castings

Composted worm droppings are a rich organic source of all the essential plant nutrients. The composted organic matter forms the bulk of your organic nutrients which are available.

They are a concentrated source of Nitrates, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Potassium and Calcium. AS well as containing Manganese, Copper, Zinc, Cobalt, Borax, Iron and Carbon.

Perlite

Perlite helps to absorb and retain water as well as giving the soil structure.

This organic medium is made by crushing and heating of volcanic rock till it explodes.

Kelp

Kelp helps to hold onto moisture as well as being a natural source of organic macro and micro elements.

Its structure helps to absorb and hold onto nutrients as well as releasing them slowly into the soil for beneficial soil microbes and plant roots.

Biochar

Biochar is a form of soil conditioner as well as helps to build a more structural mixture.

The main benefit of adding biochar to soil mixtures is that it absorbs nutrients as well as releasing them over time. This process therefore reduces the need for future feeding.
