WHAT IS IT?

Introducing JAPANESE PUMICE (HYUGA), SMALL GRAINS, 3-6MM

What is Japanese Pumice (Hyuga)? Japanese pumice, also known as Hyuga, hails from the picturesque landscapes of the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. This remarkable volcanic product, shaped by the forces of nature, offers a unique twist on the traditional pumice.

Hyuga vs. Pumice While Hyuga shares many characteristics with its conventional pumice cousin, it stands out due to its natural formation, rendering it slightly softer and more porous. This exceptional porosity causes Hyuga to defy gravity by sinking, a quality that significantly reduces erosion when watering your plants.

The benefits of incorporating Hyuga into your growing mixes are nothing short of impressive. It enhances water retention, ensures optimal nutrient delivery, and provides essential oxygen to your precious plants. With a pH level of 6, it caters to a wide range of plant species, making it a versatile choice for every green enthusiast.

How to Use? Japanese pumice, especially our Hyuga variety, is the top choice for demanding succulents and acid-loving rhododendrons, including the delicate Azalea. It’s also the go-to option for general pot plants, orchids, and, of course, an integral component in many bonsai growing mixes.

Michael Hagedorn, a bonsai expert, puts it best: “If I had only one soil component to use for bonsai, it would be 100% pumice. If you have akadama, add some.” The versatility of Hyuga extends to its reusability, as it doesn’t break down under normal circumstances. However, we strongly recommend a disinfecting treatment using Sporekill to reduce the risk of spreading fungal or bacterial issues when reusing Hyuga.

For customized mixes, you can blend Hyuga with other elements like akadama or peat, but not exceeding 20% of the total mix. Thanks to its exceptional drainage properties, Hyuga is often used to revive ailing trees and restore their vitality. In such cases, 100% Japanese pumice can be the remedy of choice.

In standard growing conditions, a 1:1 ratio of akadama to pumice works wonders. If your plants favor a bit more moisture, don’t hesitate to double the quantity of akadama. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting your journey, Japanese Pumice (Hyuga) is your trusted companion for healthier, more vibrant plants.

Discover the difference Hyuga can make for your garden. Order your supply of JAPANESE PUMICE (HYUGA), SMALL GRAINS, 3-6MM today and unlock the potential of your beloved plants.
