Powering an LED with a HPS Ballast! – Introducing the LUMii Black 720watt LED! – EP154

Andy
Yo yo yo guys, welcome back to another episode of marijuana sa weekly and today we are presenting a new LED fixture that has landed. And as always, I’ve got the year with b&e, we’re gonna go over some of the specs. How’re you doing, Dean?

Dean
Yeah, Andy, what’s up? What’s up everyone? Yeah, we mentioned this a little bit last week in the 2.4 growth team components episode. But seeing these just about to go live, we thought we’d delve a little bit more into some of the technical information behind this cool grow light. Yeah, we’re really excited about it. And for those of you who have followed us for a long time, you know, we love our LEDs. So it’s, I think it’s a really, really cool product to be looking at. And I’m really excited to be able to also sort of mention to the retail space with this with this unit. Yeah, it looks proper. It’s really cool. Some interesting tech. So yeah, keen to delve a bit more in if you guys

Andy
are interested in the light, we obviously do have it. So you have to find our website or some of our take links will be below. And yeah, let’s let’s dive in. So basically, okay, first off, we haven’t got our hands on the unit.

Dean
We’ve had the hands on the unit but to have it in our grows yet. We are awaiting them. Yeah, so we, we are going to be we’ve already stuck a deal with the supplier and we will be doing a grow series utilising this light that’s going to be coming up in the next sort of maybe six to 12 weeks that will start working on that. But we have physically held the light and heard a lot about it as well. So grow it because groceries incoming light drop is imminent.

Andy
Yeah. So I mean, there’s good fuel of quality, we know that the brand very well. And yes, it’s basically all around, it’s going to be a great light. So as you can see, six bar fixture. It’s made by Lumi it is light available in South Africa. A lot of you guys are watching but it’s I suspect it’s a UK. Stephanie in the UK at the moment, probably in the States as well.

Dean
For some of those guys 720 Watt, and this is sort of the crux right in the it’s running off the Lumi back. Yeah, so the suppliers basically said to me, you know, like there that the design thought around this light was is a whole bunch of guys using the black range, the 600 wide electronic ballasts with HD fixtures, and they wanted to sort of kind of allow the possibility for people to change over without making all of the tech redundant so instead of it I don’t quite understand the nitty gritty behind the technology I’d like to get a bit deeper into bed from what I understand the driver is the 600 Watt electronic ballast and This light comes with the you know just back to sort of the quality This light comes with a full five year warranty only if you are using the Lumia 601 electronic ballast if you plug it into another ballast you instantly void the warranty the ballasts I believe come with a one year warranty but yeah the it can only be utilised with the 600 Watt blue meet electronic ballasts and they’re really not that bad they go for you know I think just over 1000 bucks for the battle you know and they do

Andy
they do last long and as they’re running any D they’re not running hot it’s like a HBs units and then I think that’s sort of where you get a big saving you know there’s like Dean price wise it’s coming in you retail price you have found retail price

Dean
is going to be with ballast it will be about 1500 Without ballast it’s going to go for around 7200 So 7200 for 720 watt LED I personally I haven’t seen with a five year warranty I personally haven’t seen a better price than that in the in the South African market. And I think post COVID with a ramp and like poverty running South Africa you know, we’re not really that cash flush in this country. So to be able to look at a light that’s going to give you quality yields for a long time and for half the price of any other fixture you’d find on the market. I think it’s really something to be excited about. Yeah, it’s like I would buy in a heartbeat I want so yeah, it’s basically like when by when they say cheaper they’re not they’re not dicking around and really as cheaper IP 65 We’ll go over we’ve got some like close ups of all the all the stuff.

Andy
What they haven’t mentioned on the LEDs they haven’t actually specified this the chipset yet. They say that it’s going to be high quality. I have no doubt. And at that, like the quality of the chips I can Have a bit of a prude when it comes to it. But it’s like your levels of efficiency aren’t

Dean
I just don’t think the price point you’re paying, you’re going to get

Andy
it like the the level of efficiency sort of like plateaus at a point where you’re spending like way, way, way more on the like state of the art shows, but your efficiency isn’t actually going up. So I really think at the price point in efficiency, I suspect it’s going to be good value for money at the end of the day. Then they’ve got some extra stats here. Yeah, we did see. Okay, so yes, I’m a little bit on the spectrum. They do have somewhere they’ve got the PPF readings that I’m looking for now as well.

Dean
The dumb pbf 1222 depict me like the spread wise, like you’re gonna hear a great spread on this, I think you’re gonna get 1.2 1.2 Fully spread for flower, I think for veg, you’ll probably get like a one point, you may be a bit more but like, I’d say you I’ll, if I get the slides, I’ll put it when I get the slide, I’ll put it in the label my 1.2 growth ends, and I’ll grow that thing to the maximum. Who knows. So I think you’re going to be to have these in a 2.4. Like I said, last week, you’re not going to ever need to get another light in that space, and you’ll get a clean canopy across the board. So that’s what I also like about these bar fixtures, you know, they’re giving you that spread area where like, the biggest downside of the LEDs leading up until now has been spread area, you know, you getting very direct light. So you may be getting massive PPFD in the small section, but you’re missing out on the greater surrounds. Whereas with a slight, you know, spread out nicely, I mean, with with all the bio LEDs going around the market, you know, they all kind of look similar. I mean, everyone kind of just like, looks how to do it better and cheaper than everyone else. I did see here that they’ve got I believe there’s going to be IR chips, I don’t know if that’s a bit of a sneak peek

Andy
at it, but it’s, I suspect the idea, they’re not really giving much much info on that just yet. PPF, a little bit more there. And they say you’re gonna get sort of your canopy, 1000 euros per metre squares, your PPFD, which I think is sort of great standard for these. So

Dean
really, what I’m really looking forward to do with this slide is to take this light to plug it into the watt metre to see at its maximum the actual draw on the watch. And then to take the quantum the apogee quantum metre and to take it at a few different reading heights, and then maybe to take a competitor LED on the market something similar and do the same test on it and then see, like, what kind of energy efficiency because some people have questioned isn’t ballast or not energy efficient, you know? So you’d like two kinds of tech and that these are sort of thought like, what kind of efficiency is it going to give? And I think it’s going to be personally I think the draw will be what as listed and it will put out, you know, the high efficiency, so I don’t think it will be that much of a difference. But it’s you know, it will be interesting to see at what height is it outputting 187 Or you say and basically it comes in a light weight of 7.8 kilos 1.1 1.808 and five centimetres high. I mean 7.8 kilos is that when that’s excluding the ballasts, I would assume that’s excluding the ballast. But personally, I wouldn’t put the ballast on the light, I’d like attaching outside my painting onto one of the polls or something like that, you know, so that it’s separated. But you also want to have control over your demo. And if it’s on top, you’re not going to be able to get in there easily 100% This is obviously the balance that you will need to run it so if you have one you’re in luck, you just buy the fixture you don’t buy the fixture and the ballast. Once again, guys, it has to be a ilumi black 600 Watt ballast, if not, you’re going to void your warranty. So like you have to just if you don’t have a 600 watt and me bad, it’s just putting that extra couple of 1000 Just over 1000 It still makes it worth it. Yeah, take the same price as you would pay for like a 220 watt. Meanwhile driver, so it’s a pretty good, pretty good balance.

Andy
I think they’re getting I mean, they’re making these, like they have they can do these because they like these drivers. They’re the the balance they’re making, like they saw that they ramped up production to make millions of them. So I think they’re getting really good rates on them.

Dean
And there’s the unit foldable. Look, it looks like you can fit the ballast on top. If you look there, it’s like a hanging bracket in the centre. So it looks like that’s where the baddest would go. And it also seems like that would give it strength on the fold, you know, because the fold is generally where the weak part of the light is.

Andy
I wouldn’t I think they probably there’s probably a tool set up, whether it’s like some whether you would want it on it or offered. I guess it would be purely diversion. And then that’s what some split. So power is gonna run both ways. A little bit of the close ups of the chips. They look pretty nicely aligned. Come comment much on that.

Dean
Well picked. Yeah, okay. There. They’ve they’ve they have placed it on. On top. Okay, yeah. That’s pretty cool. I’d still put my next to it. Yeah. Yeah. And then that’s too this goes into there. And then this comes in power goes in outside today. Yeah. Okay.

Andy
And then that’s also plugged in. Okay, very interesting. Or, yeah, like this, this sort of

Dean
secondary orientation? Yeah, looks really cool. I mean, marketing collateral.

Andy
These also just extended extended cables. I mean, like this. Yeah, you could, you could essentially, I mean, I would probably want like, against the wall, if it’s depending on if it’s a club club, you know, if we, if we fixing up doing a club installation or run wall? Yeah. But in a tent setup, maybe it might actually make sense to hang it. But then

Dean
multiple, multiple fixtures. Yeah, depending on how many cables have like a block on the wall where all of your power sets are on ballast set. And then you know, you have your fixtures operating independently by the year right and attend space, you probably will just get it it will probably be best putting it above. But then also, I wonder like ballasts get quite hot. So it’s the same thing. Yeah, maybe you want to like to get the maximum from the LED, you potentially want to remove that balance from the gross space or out out of that tent, because you then might lose a bit out of that heat and maybe in winter, keep it in the tent and then some or put it outside.

Andy
Remember percent so guys, if you’re watching along, you may have seen this on our site or on YouTube. Yeah, we both back this light wholeheartedly. We think it’s a good decision to make. We will be following up with some more in in growth and videos and content. So make sure to like and subscribe to be ready to see that when it comes out. And otherwise. Yeah, check you guys next week. Thanks for watching. Peace guys. These guys
